⚛️ Quantum Finance
Quantum finance refers to research into the potential use of quantum computing and related quantum technologies in financial and economic applications.
The field includes areas such as optimization, simulation, pricing, risk analysis and financial cybersecurity. Most applications remain in research, experimental or early development stages.
⚛️ Quantum Computing and Finance
Quantum computers process information using quantum mechanical effects and may eventually provide advantages for certain computational problems.
Financial systems involve complex optimization, simulation and data-analysis problems. Researchers are investigating whether quantum algorithms could provide useful improvements for some of these tasks.
📊 Optimization and Portfolio Problems
Optimization is one of the areas where quantum computing is being investigated for potential financial applications. Examples include portfolio optimization, allocation problems and other complex decision-making tasks.
Quantum optimization does not currently replace conventional financial computing. Research is focused on identifying problems where quantum or hybrid quantum-classical methods could provide practical value.
📈 Pricing, Simulation and Risk
Quantum algorithms are also being studied for financial simulation, asset pricing, risk analysis and stress testing.
The Bank for International Settlements has identified potential applications including quantum simulation for stress testing and macroeconomic analysis, as well as quantum optimization for asset pricing.
These applications remain part of an emerging research field. The current generation of quantum computers is still experimental.
🤖 Quantum Machine Learning
Quantum machine learning combines quantum computing techniques with machine-learning methods and is being investigated for possible applications in finance.
Potential areas include classification, pattern recognition, forecasting and financial data analysis. However, practical advantages over established classical methods have not been demonstrated broadly across financial applications.
🛡️ Financial Security
Quantum computing is relevant to finance not only because of potential computational benefits, but also because sufficiently capable quantum computers could threaten some existing cryptographic systems.
Financial institutions rely on cryptography to protect payments, communications, identities, stored data and market infrastructure. Preparing these systems for potential quantum attacks is therefore an important part of quantum readiness.
This security transition is covered in more detail on the Post-Quantum page.
🔐 Post-Quantum Cryptography
NIST finalized its first three post-quantum cryptography standards in August 2024: FIPS 203, FIPS 204 and FIPS 205.
In March 2025, NIST selected HQC as an additional post-quantum encryption algorithm intended to provide a backup to ML-KEM for general encryption.
These standards are designed to protect information against future quantum-enabled attacks while operating on conventional computing systems.
🏦 Quantum-Ready Financial Infrastructure
Quantum readiness is becoming a financial-infrastructure issue in its own right. Institutions need to identify cryptographic dependencies, plan migrations and maintain the ability to change cryptographic systems as standards and threats evolve.
In July 2025, the BIS published a roadmap for quantum readiness in the financial system. It emphasizes the need to begin preparation now and highlights cryptographic inventory, cryptographic agility, hybrid approaches and phased migration.
In January 2026, the G7 Cyber Expert Group published a coordinated roadmap for the transition to post-quantum cryptography in the financial sector.
In August 2026, the U.S. Treasury announced a Quantum-Readiness Task Force to support the financial sector's transition toward quantum-safe technology. Its work includes financial-sector coordination, third-party readiness and digital-assets and emerging-technology risks.
🌐 Quantum Networking and Finance
Quantum networking is another developing area that may eventually affect secure communications and distributed quantum systems.
Research into quantum networks, testbeds and quantum communications is documented through government and research programs. Potential financial applications remain an area of investigation rather than evidence of a deployed global quantum financial network.
🌍 Financial Infrastructure
Modern financial infrastructure already depends on conventional computing, cryptography, telecommunications, databases, payment networks and distributed systems.
Quantum technology may eventually become an additional component of this infrastructure through specialized computation, security technologies or quantum networking. For the foreseeable future, any practical deployment is expected to involve interaction between quantum and conventional systems rather than an immediate replacement of existing financial infrastructure.
🔎 Quantum Finance vs. QFS
Quantum finance and the Quantum Financial System (QFS) are related terms in some online discussions, but they should not be treated as the same thing.
Quantum finance is a documented research field involving possible applications of quantum technologies to financial and economic problems.
QFS is a broader term used online to describe different proposed or speculative financial systems, sometimes involving quantum computing, quantum communications, digital assets, gold-backed currencies or a global financial infrastructure.
Research into quantum finance, quantum networking or post-quantum security does not by itself establish the existence of a global operational QFS.
📌 Current State
Quantum computing remains an emerging technology. Research is progressing across computing, optimization, simulation, networking and security, while practical financial applications are still being evaluated.
The most immediate financial impact of quantum technology may therefore come from quantum readiness and cybersecurity, rather than from replacing existing financial systems with quantum computers.
